To be honest, crafting the perfect cover letter salutation can feel like trying to find a needle in a haystack. You want to make a great first impression, but instead, you end up stuck between “Dear Hiring Manager” and “To Whom It May Concern.” and truthfully, Neither exactly screams, “Hire me!”

But, do you want to know how to salute your prospective HM? Hang in there, i’ll cover that in a bit.

firstly, if you think you’ve seen all of the hilarious blunders made by job applicants;

Here are some of the funniest cover letter salutations that actually made it to recruiters’ desks. If nothing else, they’ll give you a good laugh:

1. “Dear overlord”

Now, I am both irked and amused by this one. Are you applying for a job or pledging allegiance to an evil empire? Unless you’re writing to the directors of Merlin, this probably isn’t the best choice. The idea is for the recruiter to raise possible questions regarding your qualifications, not your sanity!

2. “Dear Future Boss”

Confident? Yes. Presumptuous? Also yes. Let’s tone it down a bit.

3. “To Whom It May Concern (and hopefully it concerns you)”

Points for honesty, but it’s a bit too casual for a professional setting.

The Funny Truth About “Dear Hiring Manager”

Using “Dear Hiring Manager” might feel safe, but it’s also impersonal. And we get it, finding the right name can be tricky. But think about it — if you were about to introduce yourself to someone in person, would you start with “Hey, Person I Don’t Know”? Probably not.

NOW, THE SOLUTION!

So, what should you do? Take a little extra time to research. Look up the hiring manager’s name on LinkedIn, or even call the company and ask. It shows initiative and attention to detail-qualities every employer values.

Word to close: if you’re ever tempted to start your cover letter on the generic blunder “dear HM”

Remember this golden rule: If you wouldn’t say it to your grandmother, don’t put it in your cover letter.

See you in the next one
